All K-5th grade students are screened in reading, literacy and math as part of a proactive and early intervention State-mandated program called Response to Intervention. The goal of RtI is to provide a systematic approach to the early identification of problems in these subjects by classroom teachers who will then respond with tried and tested, research-based instructional strategies. Teachers will monitor progress until students are on track.
Although classroom teachers are responsible for these interventions, a team of professionals that include reading teachers, special education teachers, school psychologists, occupational and physical therapists and speech and language therapists will support teachers and help design, implement and monitor the intervention plan in each school.
The RTI team at Colonial includes Dr. Paul Farrell, school psychologist, Christina Dee, Special Education teacher, Nancy Montano, reading specialist, Danielle Gerardi, speech teacher, Tonya Wilson, principal, and a classroom teacher and other support staff as needed.
